The Munich Residenz is a magnificent example of courtly architecture and the history of the Wittelsbach dynasty. It is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Bavaria’s history.
During an exciting tour with an official guide from the City of Munich, you will discover the magnificent world of the Munich Residenz – one of Europe’s most significant palace museums. Where the Wittelsbach dynasty once resided and ruled for centuries, a unique ensemble of historic state rooms awaits you today, brimming with splendour, history and impressive details.
On your tour, you will discover artistically designed rooms in the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Classical styles, created between the 16th and 19th centuries. Magnificent ceiling paintings, sparkling chandeliers, precious furniture and opulent wall decorations tell the story of the luxurious life at the Bavarian court and bring bygone eras to life. Between 1508 and 1918, the Bavarian dukes lived and ruled here first, later the electors, and from 1806 onwards the kings. The Grottenhof and Antiquarium, the Ancestral Gallery, the Court Church, the ‘Rich Rooms’, the Yellow Staircase – all bear witness to this to this day.
On a guided tour, our guide will offer you fascinating insights into the art, architecture and culture of past centuries, whilst also answering questions about life in the royal court: What was it like to live here back then? Did the rulers and their families ever get lost in this vast complex? And what did a typical day look like when they weren’t ruling or celebrating festivities?
